AISA national president Neha Bora was allegedly detained by Delhi Police during a protest march towards Jantar Mantar on Sunday, with the student organisation claiming she was taken away in a private vehicle without an official number plate and later taken to an undisclosed location. The allegations came as AISA activists returned to the area for the third consecutive day to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to AISA members, Bora was picked up while protesters were marching towards Jantar Mantar from Andhra Bhawan Circle on Ashoka Road. The group alleged that the vehicle used to take her away did not have an official number plate. AISA also claimed that no woman police officer was present inside the vehicle when Bora was taken away, alleging that the action violated established procedures. Delhi Police had not immediately responded to these allegations at the time of reporting.

The development occurred amid heavy police deployment and barricading around Jantar Mantar. Protesters briefly clashed with security personnel as they attempted to cross the barricades and reach the designated protest site. Visuals from the protest showed Bora attempting to climb a barricade before police intervened.

Third Consecutive Day of Anti-CEC Protests

Sunday's demonstration was part of a multi-day protest led by AISA and other groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The agitation is linked to concerns over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The protests have resulted in repeated detentions in central Delhi. More than 150 protesters were detained on Saturday, while more than 500 people, including student activists and political leaders, were detained during demonstrations on Friday. Bora, AAP leaders and activist Yogendra Yadav were among those detained earlier.

Police had denied permission for the earlier gathering and imposed restrictions in parts of central Delhi. Barricades were installed on roads leading towards Jantar Mantar, while access to some nearby metro stations was temporarily restricted during the protests.

Wider Controversy Over SIR

The protests come amid a wider political dispute over the Election Commission's handling of the SIR exercise. An investigation by The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over 10 months regarding decisions and orders linked to the process.

The Election Commission has maintained that differences of opinion and observations are a normal part of institutional deliberations and said its orders have full legal sanction and follow established procedures. For now, the allegation that Neha Bora was taken away in an unmarked private vehicle remains the claim of AISA members, with no immediate response from Delhi Police reported in the latest accounts.
