Kolkata, October 14: In a proud moment, Indian-origin economist jointly won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences along with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer. All three economists have been awarded for their experimental approach to “alleviating global poverty.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate Banerjee on being conferred with the coveted prize. Apart from the Indian PM, several other Indian politicians also extended wishes.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Banerjee for his achievement. Banerjee was born in 1961 in Mumbai to Nirmala Banerjee and Dipak Banerjee. Abhijit attended South Point School and Presidency College in Kolkata, where he completed his B.S. degree in economics in 1981. At present, Abhijit is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After His Divorce With His Wife Arundhati Tuli, Abhijit Started Living With Duflo. The couple had a child in 2012. However, They Officially Got Married In 2015.

Last year, the Nobel Prize for economics was given to William Nordhaus and Paul Romer. The prize is officially known as the "Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences." Alfred Nobel — a Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite —founded the Nobel Prize.
