New Delhi, December 20: Delhi Mahila Congress Chief and former President Paranab Mukherjee's daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee was detained on Friday for protesting near Home Minister Amit Shah's residence in New Delhi against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Sharmishtha was detained along with some other members of the outfit. According to reports, detained members of Delhi Mahila Congress were taken to Mandir Marg police station. US Issues Security Alert for its Citizens in India, Urges Them to 'Exercise Caution' Amid-CAA Protests.

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and his followers also protested near Jama Masjid against the CAA. Protesters carried the national flag and raised slogans against the new law. Meanwhile, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) closed entry and exit gates of Chawri Bazar, Lal Quila and Jama Masjid station. Trains will not halt at these stations. While speaking to reporters, Delhi police PRO MS Randhawa said that Section 144 is not imposed in walled city Jama Masjid. He added, “People here are cooperating and want peace, Delhi police are also working for the same.” On Thursday, around 1,200 people were reported detained by Delhi police for holding protests against the CAA.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 was passed in parliament last week. The law provides Indian citizenship only to non-Muslim refugees including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis and Buddhists. Many considered the new law as discriminatory against particular section of the society. Widespread protests rocked the country after the passage of the bill.
