New Delhi, October 20: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Mizoram assembly elections 2018. For the polls in the north-eastern state, the party has named 13 candidates in its first list, which was released here in the national capital by BJP's Central Election Committee chief JP Nadda.

While announcing the list of candidates, Nadda said the party has considered the aspirations of genuine workers, as well as influential members of the Mizo society who have come forward to contest on the BJP ticket. "We have considered the aspirations of our cadres in Mizoram. Youths and members of all sections of the society have been considered," he said. Check Full Schedule of Mizoram Assembly Polls.

The BJP is eyeing to bag another north-eastern state with a victory in Mizoram. The party, in the last four years, has turned the tables in Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura. In all these states, similar to Mizoram, it had insignificant electoral presence till the last assembly polls.

The notification for the polls will be issued on November 2. From this date, till November 9, the candidates will be allowed to file their nominations. The affidavits will be scrutinised by the Election Commission on November 12.

Polls will be conducted in a single-phase for all 40 seats in Mizoram on November 28. The results would be declared on December 11.

Congress is the incumbent ruling party in the state, with 34 of its MLAs in the 40-member assembly. The prime Opposition, Mizo National Front (MZF) has only 5 MLAs. Notably, the BJP and MZF failed to strike a pre-poll agreement, while signalling to join hands if the need arises following the elections.
