New Delhi, July 22: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday made a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Speaking at a meeting of Congress Working Committee, chaired by his son and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Sonia said the rhetoric used by PM Modi shows his desperation.

"Sonia Gandhi cautions about the reign of despair and fear heaped upon India’s deprived and poor. Points out that rhetoric of PM Modi shows his desperation reflecting that reverse countdown of Modi Govt has begun," Congress spokesperson said in a tweet. He added that former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh slammed the culture of constant self-praise and Jumlas of PM Modi.

Rahul Gandhi presided the first meeting of the newly constituted Congress Working Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body. This the first CWC formed by Rahul after taking over as the party president. The new Congress Working Committee was constituted on July 17. According to Surjewala, Rahul Gandhi reminded party leaders the "role of Congress as people's voice and its responsibility at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was attacking institutions, Dalits, tribals and minorities.
