Pune, November 19: The number which propped in letters exchanged by suspected naxals belongs to Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh, confirmed the Pune police on Monday. Officials privy to the probe, while speaking to reporters, said Digvijaya could soon be summoned for interrogation for his alleged Maoist links.

The letters, seized by Pune police during the Bhima Koregaon raids, revealed the alleged collusion between members of the banned CPI (Maoist) and a section of political leaders, activists and civil society. In an earlier set of letters, the police had also unearthed a purported plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Digvijaya's name propping up in the naxal letters is likely to provide fodder to the ruling BJP to lambaste the Congress in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh. The party had, on earlier occasions as well, reiterated the "anti-national" charge against the senior Congress leader, accusing him of "sympathising with extremist elements among the minorities".

In the run-up to the upcoming polls, Digvijaya had claimed that he deliberately skips election rallies as "the Congress loses votes when I speak".

"I only have one work; no publicity, no speeches. Congress loses votes with my speeches, which is why I don't attend rallies," he had said on October 16.

However, the former Madhya Pradesh CM ended up hitting the campaign trail, with the most recent public meeting addressed by him on Sunday in Indore. Launching a sharp attack against Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Digvijaya said, "Shivraj ji often describes my 10-year-rule as the worst ever. I am challenging him for an open debate to compare my 10-year government with his 15 years of rule."
