The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Saturday approved nine resolutions for a sweeping organisational overhaul, introducing age limits and a mandatory two-term cap for several party posts. The changes are aimed at bringing younger leaders into the organisation and strengthening its grassroots structure after the party's setback in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, according to a report.
The resolutions were adopted at a DMK executive committee meeting chaired by party president MK Stalin at Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters in Chennai. Age Limits and Two-Term Cap
A key feature of the overhaul is the introduction of strict age limits for organisational positions. The party has also decided that office-bearers will generally be restricted to a maximum of two terms in their respective posts.
The changes are intended to prevent prolonged occupancy of organisational positions and create opportunities for younger party workers to move into leadership roles. India Today reported that the reforms specifically seek to bring "new blood" into the party. The maximum age for district secretaries has been fixed at 70, with the post limited to two terms. DMK to Expand Organisational Districts
Under the new structure, the DMK will increase the number of organisational districts from 78 to 110. Each new district will broadly correspond to two Assembly constituencies, with the aim of making the party's administration more localised.
The restructuring is also intended to strengthen coordination between party units and improve its presence at the grassroots level.
City Secretary Posts to Be Abolished
The party has decided to abolish the standalone post of city secretary in major urban centres such as Coimbatore and Tambaram.
Instead, urban organisational units will be reorganised according to voter strength. Chennai Corporation area committees will cover an average of around 40,000 voters, while committees in other municipal corporations will cover approximately 30,000 voters each.
Focus on Younger Leadership
The reforms mark a clear push by the DMK to facilitate generational change within its organisational structure. Along with age restrictions and term limits, the party plans internal elections at different levels and a fresh membership drive aimed at increasing youth participation.
DMK leaders have described the changes as an effort to modernise party functioning and provide greater opportunities for new leaders. Party leader P Wilson welcomed the measures as positive structural reforms, according to India Today.
Reforms Follow Electoral Setback
The organisational overhaul comes after the DMK's defeat in the April 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, ending its term in government. The setback has prompted the party leadership to examine its organisational functioning and campaign strategy.
Stalin has acknowledged the need for changes within the party and indicated that some of the new measures could be difficult for existing office-bearers to accept. The leadership, however, has argued that the restructuring is necessary to strengthen the organisation and create a more effective leadership pipeline.
The nine resolutions represent one of the DMK's most significant internal restructuring exercises in recent years, with the party now seeking to rebuild its organisational network and increase the role of younger leaders following its electoral setback.
