Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday said his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), entered politics to serve the people and not with an intention to establish “monarchy or royal rule”. He made the remarks while campaigning for the party’s candidate in the Dharapuram Assembly by-election. Addressing a public gathering in Dharapuram, Vijay said some people believed that TVK had forgotten the mandate it received in the 2026 elections.
“Some people seem to think that we have forgotten that in the 2026 elections, the people voted for and elected the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam,” Vijay said, according to ANI. He alleged that some political opponents still believed they were in power and that their family continued to control the administration. Vijay said TVK did not have a mindset of monarchy or royal rule and claimed that the party had entered politics to serve people and repay the trust placed in it. “The people have placed great trust in us, and we will certainly uphold that trust,” he said. During his address, Vijay highlighted several initiatives that he said had been implemented by his government after assuming office. He said 717 TASMAC liquor shops located near schools and places of worship had been closed. He also said the government was providing free electricity for consumption of up to 200 units. On women's safety, Vijay said the government had established a special task force named “Singappen”, with 2,546 new posts created as part of the initiative.
He also said anti-drug enforcement units had been established across 37 districts and nine municipal corporations, with 65 teams working against drug-related activities. Vijay further said the milk procurement price had been increased by ₹6 per litre and that the “Thaimaaman Thanga Modhiram” scheme had been implemented from September 28.
Free Bus Travel Scheme From October 2
Vijay announced that the “Vettri Payanam” scheme, under which women will be able to travel free of cost on buses across Tamil Nadu, would be implemented statewide from October 2. Dharapuram Bypoll Scheduled for October 6
The Dharapuram Assembly constituency is among the seats where TVK is campaigning ahead of the upcoming by-election. Voting is scheduled for October 6, while counting of votes will take place on October 9. Vijay's remarks came amid an ongoing political contest between TVK and its opponents in Tamil Nadu. Later on Wednesday, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan criticised Vijay and alleged that the TVK chief was targeting the DMK at the BJP's direction. Those claims were made by Elangovan and were not independently established in the ANI report.
