Panji, August 1: Former Goa chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Churchill Alemao, speaking his mind on women working in night shifts in the state, said that "Goan women and girls are very delicate" and questioned the state government's ability to provide security to women working in night shifts.

In the controversial comment, the former CM also compared the women and girls working in Goa to those of other states and said that unlike Goan women, girls and women in other states are "fast" and hence can work in the night shifts. Goa Assembly Passes Law to Allow Women to Work in Night Shift.

Alemao also raised the issue of migrants in Goa and claimed that "almost 70 per cent" people in Goa are from outside the state.

The Goa Assembly on Thursday passed a bill which allows women in the industrial sector to work in the night shift.

Deputy chief minister Chandrakant Kavlekar, who moved an amendment to the Factories and Boilers Act, made it clear that women employees would not be forced to work at night.

However, opposition MLAs including Congress' Pratapsingh Rane, Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, Ravi Naik and MGP's Sudin Dhavalikar demanded that the bill be referred to the selection committee.

"Pass the bill after discussing it at a meeting with women in Goa. Only then will you know what the reality is. Goan women are delicate, girls are delicate, but the rest are fast. It is works for them,” Alemao told the state Assembly.
