Amaravati, September 16: Former speaker of Andhra Pradesh Kodela Siva Prasada Rao died after a suicide attempt at his residence on Monday. Kodela Siva Prasada Rao, one of the senior-most leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), was admitted to a private hospital after he attempted suicide. He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital. According to reports, Rao went to his room after having breakfast. When he didn't come down for a long time, family members went to check and found him attempting suicide. He has hanged himself from a ceiling fan. Rao was rushed to Basavatarakam Hospital where doctors confirmed his death. The six-time MLA became Speaker in 2014 after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to create Telangana.

"He (Rao) was brought dead to the hospital by his family members who told us that he tried to commit suicide by hanging. Suicide can be confirmed only after postmortem," said Hyderabad Police.

Rao, a medical graduate, won election from Narsaraopet Assembly constituency five times and Sattenapalli in 2014. He also served as the home minister and the panchayat raj minister. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Rao's relatives said that the TDP leader was under depression over the cases being foisted against his family members allegedly by the ruling YSRCP.

YSRCP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed grief over Rao's death and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members.
