Union Minister of State L Murugan resigned on Tuesday from his ministry and the Rajya Sabha, after penning a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his letter, Murugan said he wants to dedicate himself full time to strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu.
The sudden departure from the central government marks a major organisational pivot for the party in southern India. Murugan, who served as the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting as well as Parliamentary Affairs, had been representing the party in the Upper House from Madhya Pradesh. Expresses Gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Reflecting on his journey from a modest background to the Union Council of Ministers, Murugan shared his formal message after submitting his resignation letter to the Prime Minister.
In his statement on X, Murugan said, “It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve Bharat Mata and Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji.”
“From the son of daily wage labourers to serving in the Union Council of Ministers under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he further said.
Return to Grassroots Ahead of General Elections
The Union Minister said that now he wants to “return to the grassroots” and dedicate himself full-time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Murugan previously led the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit as state president before being inducted into the Union Cabinet in 2021. His return to ground-level cadre building comes as the party seeks to broaden its organisational presence and expand its vote share across Tamil Nadu's assembly and parliamentary constituencies.
