India Records 7.8% GDP Growth
According to the latest figures cited in the reports, India’s real GDP grew 7.8% in the April-June quarter of FY2026-27. The growth rate was higher than the Reserve Bank of India’s earlier 7% estimate. The government has attributed the performance to economic management and reforms, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the figures.
The Q1 GDP estimates are subject to revisions. Mahua Moitra Questions GDP Figures
Moitra questioned the comparison being made with the previous year’s first-quarter growth. She pointed to a 7.9% growth figure reported for the corresponding quarter of the previous year and claimed it was later revised downward to around 7%. She also referred to revisions involving the 2.6% growth figure.
Moitra argued that GDP estimates can change after subsequent revisions and questioned the emphasis being placed on the latest number. The TMC MP also took aim at Modi’s comments on the Opposition’s criticism of the economy. Responding to his “Jhooth Ki Goonj” remark, she said: “We are glad that ‘Jhooth Ki Goonj’ has reached your ears, we are truly blessed.”
‘Forget GDP, Tell Us Your Skincare Routine’
Moitra also shifted her focus from the economy to the Prime Minister’s appearance, making a sarcastic reference to his skin glow. “Forget GDP, Modiji… please tell us your secret skincare regimen!” In remarks reported by Live Hindustan, Moitra praised what she described as Modi’s skin glow and asked about the reason behind it.
She also referred to his foreign visits and jokingly asked whether he brought something back that contributed to his appearance. The TMC MP said she was 51 and wanted to know the skincare secret herself. Her comments were presented as a political jab rather than a serious inquiry about skincare.
Swipe At PM Modi’s Gen Z Outreach
Moitra also criticised Modi’s efforts to connect with younger audiences through social media. According to the Free Press Journal report, she said the Prime Minister was taking advice to engage with Gen Z through Instagram reels “very seriously”.
The remark came amid Modi’s broader use of social media to communicate directly with younger audiences and promote his government's economic messaging.
The government has defended the latest GDP figures and described the growth as a sign of resilience despite global economic challenges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the 7.8% real GDP growth and attributed the performance to the collective strength of Indians. He also criticised what he described as Opposition efforts to spread despair.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has also defended the growth figure and criticised the Opposition’s response. The latest exchange between Moitra and the government therefore reflects the continuing political debate over how India’s economic performance should be interpreted.
The disagreement centres not only on the headline growth figure but also on how GDP estimates are calculated, revised and compared across years. While the government is highlighting the latest 7.8% figure, Opposition leaders have questioned the reliability of preliminary estimates and the effect of revisions.
For now, the Q1 figure remains an estimate that can undergo further revisions. The next quarterly GDP estimates, covering July-September 2026, are scheduled to be released on November 30, 2026.
Moitra’s comments have added a personal and humorous element to an otherwise technical economic debate, combining criticism of the GDP data with a pointed remark about Modi’s social-media strategy and skincare.
