New Delhi, July 30: At least 1,024 MPs/MLAs across in India have declared serious criminal charges against themselves. According to an analysis of 4,856 sitting MPs/MLAs, including 770 MPs and 4,086 MLAs, by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW), 21 percent MPs and MLAs are found to be having serious criminal charges against themselves. According to the analysis, out of the 1,024 MPs and MLAs with serious criminal charges,  64 (6 percent) have declared charges related to kidnapping against themselves. The charges against these MPs and MLAs include those under Sections 359 to 369 of the IPC that include kidnapping of children, kidnapping for ransom and other cases.

The ADR-NEW report says that out of 64 MPs/MLAs with declared charges related to kidnapping, 17 belong to political parties (National, Regional and Unrecognised parties) while 4 MPs/ MLAs are Independents. BJP has the maximum number (16) of MPs and MLAs with charges of kidnapping against them while the Congress and RJD have 6 each.

Meanwhile, the report says that most MLAs with charges of kidnapping against them are from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (9 each). Among the MPs who declared kidnapping charges against them are five from Lok Sabha and three from Rajya Sabha.

The report comes at a time when it's just a year to go for the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

Earlier last month, an ADR reports also stated that 96 percent of the ministers in Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy's cabinet are millionaires or crorepatis. The report also revealed that N Mahesh of the BSP was the only leader who is not a crorepati among those who were analysed.
