Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been booked in connection with their alleged forcible entry into the Akashvani Bhawan premises during Tuesday’s INDIA bloc protest march towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi.
Delhi Police received a complaint from Akashvani Bhawan authorities, and an FIR has reportedly been registered against the Gandhi siblings and other accompanying INDIA bloc leaders.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Booked Over Akashvani Entry
The complaint relates to the events of October 6, when Opposition MPs and leaders marched from Parliament Street towards the ECI office to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The march was stopped by police near the NITI Aayog area, around 200-300 metres from the Election Commission headquarters. Several Opposition MPs were detained after police barricaded the route. Amid the standoff, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made their way towards Akashvani Bhawan. Reports said Akashvani staff initially tried to prevent them from entering the premises, but the two Congress leaders eventually went inside and began a sit-in protest.
Eight-Hour Sit-In at Akashvani Bhawan
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Opposition leaders remained inside the Akashvani Bhawan premises for more than eight hours, insisting that they be allowed to meet the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. Several Congress MPs, including K C Venugopal, Pawan Khera, Deepender Hooda and others, also joined the protest. The demonstration continued through the afternoon and evening despite the police presence outside the premises.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier said that he wanted to meet the CEC over what he described as “vote chori” and the concerns surrounding electoral rolls. He also posted on X, “Gyanesh it’s done bro. Time to resign.” Rahul Gandhi Questions EC for Not Meeting Opposition Leaders Even as Police Detain Protesting Congress Cadres.
Rahul, Priyanka Detained After Protest
Delhi Police eventually moved to clear the premises and detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Congress leaders on Tuesday evening. Around 50 MPs and about 200 other people were reportedly detained during the police action. The detained leaders were subsequently taken away from the protest site. The Gandhi siblings were later released by Delhi Police on Tuesday night.
Opposition Protest Over CEC Gyanesh Kumar
The protest was part of the INDIA bloc's campaign against the Election Commission over the SIR exercise and alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. Opposition parties have demanded greater transparency and have called for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, has maintained its position on the electoral-roll revision process. The confrontation has intensified in recent days, with the Opposition seeking a meeting with the poll panel and the ECI insisting that meetings follow its established procedure. The FIR over the alleged forcible entry into Akashvani Bhawan adds another legal dimension to the political confrontation following Tuesday's protest.
