Chennai, January 3: The results of Tamil Nadu local body polls, held after a gap of eight years, indicate a victory for the DMK and its alliance. The results declared till Thursday night suggest a setback for the ruling AIADMK. According to reports, DMK alliance was leading in 2021 of 5067 panchayat union posts. Notably, this is the first local body elections in Tamil Nadu after the demise of J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi. On Friday, MK Stalin-led party continued its lead over the ruling party by winning 100 seats for district panchayat ward member posts. The AIADMK won 70 of 191 seats announced. There are a total of 515 seats in this category.

Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli contributed largely to the gains of DMK. In Tiruchi, the DMK won 18 district panchayat ward member posts, while in Thanjavur it secured 11. In Cuddalore and Krishnagiri, MK Stalin's party bagged 11 seats each.

The lead trends of two major parties- DMK and AIADMK- were alternating since Thursday morning when the counting of votes commenced. DMK managed to retain more number of panchayat union councillor posts and district councillor posts. In a close contest, AIADMK is not far behind. Official results are likely to be declared by Friday evening.
