Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh briefly spoke with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, July 21, as the Congress staged a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence at Lok Kalyan Marg over the police action against student protesters. According to sources, Singh conveyed that the government was prepared to discuss the issue in Parliament but stressed that proceedings should continue in an orderly manner without creating a law-and-order situation.
The interaction took place after Rahul Gandhi led senior Congress leaders in a march towards the Prime Minister's residence, demanding the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of student protests and examination-related issues.

What Jitendra Singh Told Rahul Gandhi
According to sources, Jitendra Singh told Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders that the Centre was willing to hold a discussion in Parliament. "There has to be order in Parliament. A law and order situation need not be created. As it is a sensitive area, any such prolonged protest could be a security concern," Singh is believed to have told the Congress leaders. Sources also said Rahul Gandhi could remain at the protest site until later in the evening.
Congress Leaders Hold Protest
The demonstration was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera, Praniti Shinde and Manickam Tagore, among other party leaders.
The Congress leaders held a foot march from Rajaji Marg towards the Prime Minister's residence, alleging "brutalities against students yesterday" during the police action against protesters.
During the protest, 84-year-old Mallikarjun Kharge, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, was seen standing with his hands raised and tied with symbolic tags distributed by Rahul Gandhi among MPs and protesters. Kharge was later escorted away in a vehicle. Earlier, Delhi Police detained several Congress leaders, including MP K. Suresh, during the protest outside the Prime Minister's residence.
Protest Follows Student Demonstrations
The Congress protest was organised in response to police action during the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) march to Parliament a day earlier.
Punjab Congress Campaign Committee Chairperson Charanjit Singh Channi criticised the BJP over the handling of the demonstrations.
The Opposition has accused the government of using excessive force against students protesting examination-related issues and demanding education reforms.
BJP, Congress Meet Injured Protesters
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal visited injured student protesters receiving treatment after the police crackdown in Delhi.
The Congress said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should apologise for what it described as "brutality" against the country's youth. Union Health Minister JP Nadda also visited Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital and met the injured protesters.
During the visit, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das presented three demands to Nadda, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and compensation of INR 1 crore to the families of NEET aspirants, "more than 20 of whom have lost their lives".
