Raj Babbar has resigned from the post of Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief on Tuesday. The development is on the back of Congress' worst performance in the recent Lok Sabha bypolls to Gorakhpur and Phulpur. However, according to reports, the party is yet to accept his resignation. There are reports that if Raj Babbar’s resignation gets accepted, Jatin Prasad and Pramod Tiwari are most likely to be the top contenders for the post.

As per an ANI report, the two seats hold importance in state politics and the bypolls there were necessitated after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath resigned from his Gorakhpur seat to form BJP government in the state, and Phulpur representative Keshav Prasad Maurya stepped down to take the post of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister.

Raj Babbar entered politics by joining Janata Dal in 1989, which was led by V. P. Singh. He later joined Samajwadi Party and was elected as Member of Parliament of India three times. In 2006, he was suspended from Samajwadi Party and it was in 2008 that he joined Indian National Congress.
