New Delhi, April 24: The Congress on Wednesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 'hugplomacy', saying his extravagant manner of sharing bonhomie with US President Donald Trump not benefited any Indian in the United States of America.

The party on their Twitter handle ridiculed PM Modi's hugplomancy, claiming it failed to help the US Indian spouses who would be affected by the US government's decision to revoke the H1B visa.

The Tweet also questions PM Modi on whether he will stand and protect for the interest of overseas Indians who would be affected by this decision.

According to news reports, spouses of H-1B visa workers in the US will no longer be able to seek employment or set up their own business, which for many was something as simple as running a crèche, tutoring, conducting yoga classes or supplying desi home-cooked food to nearby offices.

The US President, in a bid to attain the objectives of ‘Buy American, Hire American’, will implement an executive order signed by him last April, which will bar wives of H1B visa holders from obtaining employment. The move will impact nearly a 100,000 spouses of Indian workers.

Earlier, in May 2015, the Barack Obama administration introduced a policy which permitted certain H-4 visa holders (spouses of H-1B visa holders who were on track for a green card) to apply for an employment authorisation document. The policy will stand annulled after President Trump's executive order comes into effect.
