Gurugram's administration has asked offices to allow work-from-home (WFH) and schools to conduct classes online on August 25 after heavy rain overwhelmed the city's infrastructure on Monday, August 24. The district administration said Gurugram received 70 mm of rainfall by 1.30 pm, with several major roads and junctions reporting severe waterlogging and traffic disruption.
Though it rained for only about an hour, the downpour once again exposed the city's drainage and civic infrastructure challenges. Key areas including Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Railway Road, Sector 5, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road and Basai Road were among the worst affected. Administration Advises WFH, Online Classes
In response to the waterlogging and disruption, Gurugram's administration asked offices to allow employees to work from home.
Schools were also advised to shift to online classes to reduce movement on waterlogged roads and help ease traffic congestion.
The measures came after the rainfall disrupted normal movement across several parts of the city.
Major Roads Waterlogged
Visuals of motorists abandoning their vehicles after getting stuck on flooded roads were widely shared on social media.
Students returning from school were also seen moving towards higher ground, including raised bus stops, to avoid getting caught in deep or muddy water.
The waterlogging also raised concerns about open manholes that could remain hidden beneath the floodwater, posing an additional risk to pedestrians and motorists.
Delhi-Jaipur Expressway Traffic Slows
The rain also affected traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, with thousands of vehicles moving slowly despite the wide carriageway.
Commuters said the stretch from Signature Tower to Hero Honda Chowk, which usually takes around 15 minutes to cover, took at least 50 minutes on Monday.
A large section of the expressway near Cyber Hub, opposite Gateway Tower Metro station, was submerged, disrupting traffic on the major thoroughfare.
Sheetla Mata Road Among Worst-Hit Areas
Sheetla Mata Road, which has emerged as one of Gurugram's flood-prone locations this monsoon, was among the worst affected areas.
The latest waterlogging has renewed concerns over the city's ability to manage heavy rainfall despite Gurugram's extensive commercial and residential development.
Recurring Infrastructure Concerns
Residents of the 'Millenium City' have repeatedly raised concerns about waterlogging and inadequate civic infrastructure during periods of heavy rain.
The latest disruption has once again highlighted the recurring problems faced by commuters and residents when rainfall exceeds the capacity of the city's drainage and road infrastructure.
