The Holy Week in the Vatican which is presided by the Pope witnesses various observances. On Good Friday, the church will celebrate the Passion of the Lord, commemorating His crucifixion and death. Pope Francis will preside over the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Cross, and the Communion Rite from 5 pm onwards at St Peter's Basilica.

The Easter Vigil takes place on April 20 at 8.30pm. After blessing the new fire in the atrium of St Peter's Basilica, the processional entrance with the Easter candle and the singing of the 'Exsultet' (or 'Easter Proclamation') will be held. Pope Francis will then preside over the Liturgy of the Word, the Baptismal Liturgy and the Celebration of the Eucharist. Easter Mass will be thereafter celebrated in St Peter's Square on April 21st at 10 am. At the end of the celebration, the Pope will impart the 'Urbi et Orbi' blessing, a customary practice on the City of Rome and the World, from the central loggia of St. Peter's Basilica.
