Significance of Sawan Shivratri

Shivratri which falls during Shravana month is known as Sawan Shivaratri. While the entire month is dedicated to respecting Lord Shiva, it is said that on this day if people bow down to the Lord, they will attain Moksha. A big Shiva Puja is performed and it is highly auspicious. The day is just as auspicious like the day of Maha Shivratri which is celebrated during February or March. On the day of Sawan Shivratri, famous temples of Lord Shiva organise a Shiv Puja. Since the day is so significant, over thousands of devotees pay a visit to the temple and perform Gangajal Abhishekam.

This festive day is celebrated popularly in the Northern states of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar. According to Drikpanchang, the Nishita Kaal Puja Time for this day will be for 45 minutes. It starts at 12:19 AM till 01:03 AM, Jul 31. On 31st July, the Shivaratri Parana Time will be 06:15 AM to 11:57 AM.

Puja Vidhi of Sawan Shivratri
Devotees observe a special fast on the day of Sawan Shivratri. On the day before this Shivratri Vrat, devotees are advised to eat only once. But one of the day of Sawan Shivratri, after morning rituals of the day, people have to observe a full fast on Shivratri. It is basically called as making a Sankalp or a pledge to seek blessings of Lord Shiva to finish the fast without any interference.
Devotees should also take the second bath of the day in the evening before they head to do a Shiva Puja or visit Lord Shiva temple. The Shiva puja is done during the night and devotees break the fast on the next day. It is said that Shiva Puja and breaking of the fast should be done with the Chaturdashi Tithi.
