New Delhi, January 4: Egg prices across India have surged to record levels this January, with retail rates in several major cities crossing 8 INR per unit. The sharp increase, often referred to as "eggflation," has been driven by a combination of peak winter demand, a seasonal dip in production, and a significant rise in poultry feed costs. According to data from the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), wholesale prices have seen a steady climb, reflecting a tightening market for one of the country's most essential protein sources.
Rising Costs in Major Urban Centres
In metropolitan hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, consumers are feeling the pinch as retail prices for a dozen eggs now hover between 90 INR and 100 INR. As of early January, wholesale rates in Mumbai were recorded at approximately 6.85 INR per egg, while Chennai and Kolkata saw prices reach between 6.90 INR and 7.10 INR in bulk. In some residential pockets and smaller retail shops, the price per egg has touched 9 INR. This represents a significant jump from the 5 INR to 6 INR range typically seen during the summer months, marking a nearly 40% increase in some regions. Supply Constraints and Production Costs
Industry experts point to a "perfect storm" of factors for the current price volatility. Production naturally slows down during the colder months, even as demand peaks due to winter dietary habits and the holiday season. Furthermore, the cost of poultry feed. primarily maize and soymeal, has remained high, increasing the "farm gate" price that farmers must charge to remain profitable.
Additionally, a surge in exports to countries in the Middle East has further tightened domestic supply. With millions of eggs being shipped abroad daily from poultry hubs like Namakkal in Tamil Nadu, less stock is available for Indian retail markets, contributing to the upward pressure on prices.
Impact on Households and Social Schemes
The rising cost of eggs is impacting more than just household budgets. In several states, the price hike has created challenges for government-sponsored social schemes. Many schools under the Mid-Day Meal program and Anganwadi centers have struggled to maintain their menus, as the government’s fixed allocation per egg often falls below the current market rate of 7 INR to 8 INR.
While prices traditionally begin to moderate toward the end of February as the weather warms, poultry farmers suggest that a return to lower price points may be slow. With high overhead costs and steady demand, analysts expect rates to remain firm for the remainder of the winter season. Retailers and consumers alike are now closely watching wholesale trends for any signs of a mid-quarter correction.
