The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged consumers to report unsafe food practices through its Food Safety Connect mobile app as part of a broader enforcement drive against alleged food safety, labelling and advertising violations. "Don’t just notice it, report it! Unsafe food practices affect everyone," the regulator said in a post on X, encouraging consumers to turn awareness into action through the app.

The initiative comes days after FSSAI issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart over consumer complaints alleging contaminated eggs, milk and spoilt food items, citing alleged violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. According to the regulator, complaints submitted through the app are forwarded to the concerned food safety authority for verification and appropriate action.

How to Report Unsafe Food Using the Food Safety Connect App

Consumers can report food safety concerns through the Food Safety Connect app or the online grievance portal by following these steps:

Steps What to Do
1 Download the "Food Safety Connect" app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or visit foscos.fssai.gov.in/consumergrievance.
2 Register or log in and select the option to lodge a new complaint or grievance.
3 Enter details of the food business, including its name, address and FSSAI licence or registration number, if available. Consumers can also scan the QR code displayed at the outlet.
4 Describe the complaint, such as adulteration, poor hygiene, expired products, mislabelling or misleading claims.
5 Upload supporting evidence, including photographs, videos or relevant documents.
6 Submit the complaint. A unique tracking ID will be generated automatically.
7 Track the complaint using the generated ID. It will be forwarded to the relevant food safety authority for verification and action.
8 If dissatisfied with the outcome, consumers can use the app's "re-raise complaint" feature to escalate the matter.

What Can Consumers Report?

The Food Safety Connect app allows users to report a range of food safety concerns, including:

  • Adulterated food products
  • Expired food items being sold
  • Poor hygiene at food establishments
  • Incorrect or misleading food labelling
  • Misleading claims on food packaging
  • Other food safety violations

The app also enables users to verify whether a food business holds a valid FSSAI licence or registration and access advisories issued by the regulator.

Recent Enforcement Action by FSSAI

FSSAI has intensified enforcement against alleged violations across the food sector in recent weeks.

The regulator recently issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart over consumer complaints related to allegedly contaminated eggs, milk and spoilt food products.

In another case, FSSAI shut down a spice manufacturing unit in Lucknow after an inspection reportedly found suspected adulteration. Officials seized the suspected products and collected samples for laboratory testing.

Separately, notices were issued to several alcoholic beverage manufacturers over the alleged use of unauthorised flavouring agents and age-related marketing claims. The regulator also took action against multiple beverage companies for allegedly marketing products as "energy drinks" in violation of applicable norms.

Companies Issued Notices Over Labelling

FSSAI has also served notices to Lotte India, Ferns N Petals, Kubera Foods and Heritage Foods over alleged misleading advertising and labelling practices.

The companies have been asked to explain within seven days why action should not be initiated. According to FSSAI, the alleged violations include claims such as "100 per cent vegetarian," "100 per cent natural," "premium chocolate," "fresh," and "no preservatives," along with inaccurate nutritional information and inadequate ingredient disclosures.

According to FSSAI, the Food Safety Connect app has been developed to strengthen consumer participation in food safety enforcement by enabling the public to directly report suspected violations. The regulator says complaints are routed to the appropriate jurisdictional authority for verification and further action.
