Why OpenAI Is Cutting Off Access
According to an official statement published on the OpenAI Blog, the decision stems from concerns over contract enforcement and safety compliance under SpaceX ownership.
OpenAI stated it cannot be confident that SpaceX will use its technology within its terms of service. The company cited legal history with Musk's entities, noting that after Musk acquired Twitter, now X, the company violated its contract terms with OpenAI. OpenAI invoked a limited time window clause in its custom contract with Cursor that allows cancellation upon a change of control. What This Means For Developers
Developers who rely on OpenAI models, such as GPT-4o or GPT-5 variants, within Cursor will bear the immediate brunt of the fallout. However, Cursor is positioning itself to absorb the impact through other heavy compute infrastructure.
By joining SpaceX, Cursor has gained access to the Colossus GPU cluster, which the company claims is the largest fleet of GPUs in the world. Cursor and SpaceX are also focused on training their own low cost, frontier coding models, such as Grok 4.6 and the Composer series, to compete directly with OpenAI and Anthropic.
While OpenAI access is ending, Cursor still supports alternative model agnostic routing to other providers, including Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini, for the time being.
OpenAI has stated it is "ready to go above and beyond to support" affected developers during this transition, though specific migration tools or API subsidies have yet to be detailed.
