The victim, Navasu Phuphane, was beaten to death with wooden sticks in Palghar after he objected to three men throwing a poisonous substance into the Vaitarna river to kill fish. The accused, Jitendra Patil, Ritesh Patil, and Pramod Warghade, allegedly tied, dragged, and assaulted the accused until he succumbed to his injuries. All three were arrested within 12 hours of the incident.
