Another legend relates to the Mahabharata, where the sage Astika stopped King Janamejaya's snake sacrifice (Sarpa Satra) to avenge his father’s death by snakes. Astika’s intervention on Panchami Tithi pleased the serpent gods, leading to the origin of the festival.
