A massive sinkhole opened on the westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 49 in Melville on Thursday, forcing the closure of two lanes and causing major traffic disruption ahead of rush hour. Police said a car partially entered the 8-foot-deep hole but no injuries were reported. Emergency repair work is expected to continue for at least 24 hours.
