Demonetisation is more than a year old, but we are still facing similar situations in the country. ATMs in different states are running dry, reminding us of the days following November 7, 2016, when the currency was a rare sight. With similar problems refacing people are resorting to different techniques. Now addressing the issue, many shopkeepers in Kanpur are trying to evoke Gods.

Kanpur's Ghanta Ghar Chauraha witnessed a crowd praying for ATMs to function normally. Local businessmen came together to offer special prayers to 'ATM Deva'. They performed the aarti with plates full of flowers and lamp.

They also held placards protesting against the cash crush. One of it reads, "desh mei cash ki killat door karo (end the cash shortage in the country)".

According to an ANI report, the traders in the area said that cash shortage has affected their business as customers would withdraw money from nearby ATMs to make purchases. But with the cash crunch, their businesses have slowed down.

The government on Tuesday acknowledged that there was a "temporary shortage" of cash in some states.  The Reserve Bank of India attributed the cash crunch to logistical issues and assured the RBI vaults had sufficient cash. The reports of cry ATMs emerged from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. Many social media users expressed their displeasure in the incident stating it is reminiscent of the 2016 demonetisation.
