IndiGo garnered the wrath of netizens when they started charging extra for web check-in. The development was welcomed with severe backlash on social media too. While they clarified that their plan remains the same, IndiGo continues to be the bad books of people, Indian Railways took a dig at them. Indian Railways took to Twitter saying, "Why pay a premium for web-check in on flights...when you can just take a train?'

IndiGo in a series of tweets said, "As per our revised policy all seats are chargeable for web check-in. Alternatively, you may check-in at the airport for free. Seats will be assigned as per the availability." It was said that IndiGo passengers will have to shell out up to Rs 800 extra for web check-in, as the airline has revised its policy. Indian Railways thereafter tweeted, "No need to pay extra charges for Web-Check-in. No long queues for checking in your luggage. Avoid unreasonable tariff & reduce your carbon footprint by travelling on the good old Indian Railways at affordable rates."

As IndiGo continued to make headlines, the central government on Monday said it will check the issue of some airlines charging a fee for advance seat selection through web check-in. The Aviation Ministry took to Twitter saying, "MoCA (Ministry of Civil Aviation) has noted that airlines are now charging for web check-in for all seats. We are reviewing these fees to see whether they fall within the unbundled pricing framework."

Following a hue and cry, IndiGo issued a statement that they have not changed the web check-in practice. The low-cost airline on Monda said that if a passenger doesn't have any seat preference and don't want to pay in advance for seating selection, they can reserve any free seat available at a time of web check-in.
