Maharashtra is going to get its first police museum in Mumbai. The Mumbai Police Commissioner's office, the Mumbai Police Foundation and Tata Trusts have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for setting up the museum on the rich history of the police force which was founded in 1864. It is first of its kind project backed by the Tate Trusts.

The MoU also mentions a project to conserve and archive historic police records of Mumbai Police. It is among the oldest in the country at 154 years. It also includes restoration of artefacts and equipment of historical value to police history. It will also look at taking steps that can increase the efficiency of the city police and ensure social, cultural and public welfare.

Mumbai Police Commissioner D.D. Padsalgikar and his team who initiated the project with the Mumbai Police Foundation aims to generate awareness, internally through the archives project and externally through the Police Museum.

The museum will come up at the Crawford Market, the police commissioner's office headquarters in Mumbai. The museum in the old heritage building will occupy six rooms and a corridor on the ground floor. Police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar said that building is already under renovation. The trust, charitable organisation of Tata Group founders has not revealed the amount involved in the project.
