The Union Cabinet has approved a major INR 37,500 crore scheme to accelerate coal gasification in India. The initiative aims to convert domestic coal and lignite into syngas for producing fertilisers, chemicals, and fuels, thereby reducing dependence on imported LNG and petrochemicals. Officials claim the programme will create around 50,000 jobs and help establish 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030. It will support 25 projects handling 75 million tonnes of coal initially, with financial incentives covering 20 per cent of plant and machinery costs. The government expects this push to enhance energy security, boost domestic urea production, and strengthen self-reliance in key sectors. The decision was announced by the PMO on May 14, 2026.
