Guwahati, January 29: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report regarding alleged "direct links" between state Congress President Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan will be made public on February 8, 2026. Speaking after a cabinet meeting in Dispur, Sarma stated that the investigation involves Gogoi, his wife Elizabeth Colburn, and a Pakistani national, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. The Chief Minister characterized the findings as "shocking" and claimed the report provides evidence of foreign affiliations. Sarma further challenged Gogoi to file a defamation suit if the allegations were unfounded, asserting the government would present the facts at a scheduled press conference. Gaurav Gogoi has previously dismissed these accusations as "baseless" and "politically motivated," labeling them a diversionary tactic ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. The state cabinet is expected to formally review the SIT memorandum on February 7 to decide on further legal actions.
