Banu was widely considered to be the first female professional wrestler from India. According to a report on BBC, Banu's foray into wrestling was a path-breaking one, with the sport mainly dominated by men at that time, in the 1940s and 50s. She challenged male wrestlers, promising to marry anyone who beat her. As per the report, her impressive performances in wrestling earned her the moniker 'Amazon of Aligarh'.
