Dousing all the speculations about the big announcement around Delhi Daredevils, the Delhi-based Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise has announced a brand makeover and has changed its name to Delhi Capitals. ‘What’s in the name’, said William Shakespeare! However, with the change in the title, is the franchise hoping to have a change of fortunes?
Well, the build-up to the event was meticulously planned. Going by the tagline ‘A New Delhi Rises’, the event was broadcast live on its official Instagram and Facebook pages too. Delhi Capitals’, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, skipper Shreyas Iyer had a message to greet the fans initially. It was local munda, recently acquired, Shikhar Dhawan who had a message through video-conferencing too. Kiran Kumar Gandhi, CEO and MD at GMR Infrastructure, said, “We're sure this exciting partnership is going to do good for Delhi's IPL Team this season. The team has built its young core foundation, and they're now rising at the national level.”
Mohammed Kaif, who is appointed as the assistant coach of Delhi Capitals was also present at the occasion. Kaif said, “I can't wait to get started. This team has a promising core and loves the game as much as every cricketing fanatic does."
The franchise traded Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL Trade Window before the auction. Big ticket players like Gautam Gambhir, Jason Roy, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammad Shami, and Dan Christian were released by the team management ahead of the IPL 2019 season. Delhi Daredevils Delhi Capitals have finished in the bottom half of the IPL Points Table more often than not after tasting success in the initial few seasons. With IPL 12 Auction around the corner, it will be interesting to see how the team fares at the auction, and in the league eventually.
