Plunkett's highly anticipated transition to the diamond comes after a distinguished cricket career and his subsequent move to the United States. His debut is a testament to his determination to embrace new challenges, joining the Oakland Ballers in the Pioneer Baseball League (PBL), an independent competition that is an official Major League Baseball (MLB) Partner League. He participated under the PBL's "marketing player" exception, a rule designed to allow teams to temporarily sign high-profile cross-sport athletes.

Plunkett's journey from the cricket pitches of England to the baseball mounds of America has been a fascinating one. The fast bowler, who last played internationally in the 2019 World Cup final, where he took three crucial wickets, relocated to the United States, where his wife is from. He has also been involved with Major League Cricket (MLC), playing for the San Francisco Unicorns.

Reflecting on his debut, Plunkett admitted to some nerves but expressed his delight at the outcome. "Originally, I thought it's like the ceremonial open pitch, but it was the real thing. I was first on the mound, a little bit nervous, but the catcher was excellent," Plunkett stated in a post-game interview. He further elaborated on his unique style, suggesting it might have caught the opposing batter off guard. "But yeah, I mean I got that strikeout. I think the hitter didn't know what was coming. I think it was a bit unusual, a mix between bowling and then pitching."
