‘Achrekar Sir’, as they called him, Ramakant Vithal Achrekar breathed his last in Mumbai on January 2. Known to shape careers of Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli and several other Indian cricketers, Achrekar’s death at the age of 87, comes as sad news for the cricket fans. Fondly known as Achrekar Sir’s favourite student, Sachin Tendulkar wrote an emotional message, expressing grief. Tendulkar said, “Cricket in heaven will be enriched with the presence of Achrekar sir. Like many of his students, I learnt my ABCD of cricket under Sir’s guidance. His contribution to my life cannot be captured in words. He built the foundation that I stand on.”

Rashmi Dalvi, kin of Ramakant Achrekar, informed that he had passed away due to age-related ailments. Dalvi said, “He (Archrekar Sir) is no more with us. Remembered for his stupendous coaching and mentoring skills, Ramakant Achrekar was awarded the Dronacharya Award in 1990. In 2010, he was conferred with the country’s highest civilian award in the sports category, i.e. Padma Shri.
