Dhawan suffered a thumb injury during India's clash against Australia during the group stage of World Cup 2019, in which he scored a 117-run knock. Dhawan could not continue his journey in the Indian squad and was replaced by reserve player Rishabh Pant.

In place of Dhawan, Team India went ahead with KL Rahul as opener who has shown a marvellous performance in the World Cup 2019 tournament so far with two half-centuries and one century. In spite of his injury, Dhawan has been active on social media, voicing and expressing his support for the Virat Kohli and company.
