Shubman Gill's T20I Omission and Form Concerns
Gill's exclusion from the T20I squad follows a period of lean form in the shortest format, contrasting sharply with his dominant performances in Tests and ODIs. His last appearance in a T20I for India was on December 14, 2025, against South Africa. Since his return to the T20I side for the Asia Cup in September 2025, Gill accumulated 291 runs at an average of 24.25, failing to register a single fifty.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar, when announcing the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, had cited team combinations and the need for additional wicketkeeper-batters like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as reasons for Gill's omission. This decision marked a significant turning point, as Gill had briefly served as the T20I vice-captain in late 2025.
A Stark Contrast: ODI and Test Dominance
While his T20I journey has hit a roadblock, Gill's leadership and batting prowess in the longer formats remain unparalleled. He recently scripted history on October 1, 2026, by becoming the first captain to score a double century in both Test and ODI cricket. This remarkable feat was achieved with an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls against the West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati, following his majestic 269 against England in a Test match at Edgbaston in 2025.
Demonstrating his consistent brilliance, Gill, who is currently the World No. 1 ranked ODI batter, has already amassed 894 runs in just 11 ODIs at an astounding average of 127.71 this year alone. His focus, for now, remains firmly on his duties as Test and ODI captain, with an all-format tour of New Zealand also on the horizon.
