Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 2nd T20I witnessed a tragic incident after two Sri Lankan players Shehan Jayasuriya and Kusal Mendis collided against each other during the match. Both the players also underwent medical attention after the tragic incident. The incident occurred after Shehan Jayasuriya tried to catch Mitchell Santner's shot near the boundary. The New Zealand all-rounder played a long flight shot when his team needed seven runs off four balls. Jayasuriya ran to grab the catch at wide long-on region. Kusal Mendis, who was fielding at deep mid-wicket, also ran towards the ball to take the catch. Injury on the field!

After the collision, both the Sri Lanka players laid on the ground and medical team and team staff came in to check any case of injuries. At first, umpire signalled for a four, but the replays showed that Jaysuriya's feet had touched the ropes while holding the ball. As a result, umpire signalled for a six and the scores were levelled. After the delivery, New Zealand only needed one run off three balls.

On the next ball, Santner hit a boundary on Wanidu Hasaranga’s delivery and New Zealand won the match by four wickets. Earlier, hosts Sri Lanka scored 161/9 in 20 overs with Avishka Fernando's 37-run-knock and Niroshan Dickwella's 39. While chasing, Kiwis batsmen Colin de Grandhomme (59) and Tom Bruce (53) hit half-centuries to take their team to victory. Santner played a brilliant role with the bat in the death overs scoring 10 runs off just two balls.
