Why Is Nathan Lyon Not Playing in SA vs AUS 2nd Test 2026 Match?
Nathan Lyon is expected to be omitted from Australia's playing XI for the 2nd Test against South Africa, starting October 18, 2026, in Gqeberha. This tactical decision, aimed at strengthening the pace attack given the St George's Park conditions, means the veteran off-spinner, despite being fit, will likely make way for an additional fast bowler.
In a significant tactical move for the second SA vs AUS Test of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 series, Australia's veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon is omitted from the playing XI against South Africa, with the match commencing today, October 18, 2026, at St George's Park. This decision, as indicated by team discussions, is geared towards strengthening the pace battery in anticipation of conditions favouring fast bowlers. The 38-year-old Lyon, who has recovered from a hamstring injury sustained in an Ashes Test in December 2025, was included in Australia's XI for the Durban encounter. However, keeping weather conditions in mind, Australia roped in pacer Scott Boland into the XI, which features four fast bowlers. This would mark a rare instance of a fully fit Lyon being left out for tactical reasons in recent times.
Match Details and Series Context
The second Test between the Proteas and Australia is scheduled from October 18-22, 2026, at St George's Park in Gqeberha, South Africa. Play is set to begin daily at 1:30 PM (IST). Australia currently holds a commanding 1-0 lead in the three-match series, having secured a comprehensive 214-run victory in the first Test in Durban. South Africa, the reigning World Test Champions from 2025, will be eager to bounce back on home soil.
Historically, St George's Park has shown some spin-friendly characteristics; however, for matches played between mid-April and mid-November, pace bowlers have historically enjoyed a better average in first-class cricket at the venue. This statistical nuance likely played a pivotal role in the Australian management's tactical considerations. South Africa vs Australia Live Streaming Online and Free Telecast, 2nd Test 2026.
