Dutee Chand, India's first openly gay athelete, who won laurels for India in the ongoing World University Games 2019 at Naples in Italy, is on the cover of fashion magazine Cosmopolitan's July Digital edition issue. The athlete coming out in May this year, when she acknowledged that she is in a same-sex relationship, created quite a stir. Dutee's courage was acknowledged by one and all and now she features on the cover of the magazine, which is getting rave reviews for featuring the sprinter on the cover page. Dutee Chand holds the national record for being the fastest in the 100-metres race. She had also won two silver medals at the 2018 Asian Games. After the Supreme Court of India decriminalised Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, Chand came forward and declared that she is gay, becoming the first Indian athlete to do so.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed sprinter Dutee Chand for winning the women's 100 m gold in the World University Games at Naples in Italy."Exceptional achievement of an exceptional athlete! Congratulations @DuteeChand for winning a hard-earned and well-deserved Gold in the Women's 100 m finals. You make India proud! #Universiade FISU," Modi tweeted.
