FEI Suspends Equestrian Federation of India, Bans Indian Athletes and Horses From International Events

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has suspended the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) starting December 1, 2026, due to a prolonged governance crisis and failure to conduct elections. This critical decision, finalized at an FEI board meeting on October 13, 2026, bars Indian riders, officials, trainers, and horses from international events.

Indian equestrian sports face a significant setback as the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has announced the suspension of the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), effective December 1, 2026. The decision, stemming from a protracted governance crisis within the Indian body, will prevent Indian athletes, officials, trainers, and horses from participating in international events. The FEI board finalised the suspension at an online meeting held on October 13, 2026, with the official communication dispatched in a letter dated October 15 to the members of the EFI's ad hoc committee, Lt Col (retd) Sandeep Dewan and advocate Vidushpat Singhania. Indian Sports Ministry Grills NSFs Over Disappointing 2026 Asian Games Performance, Demands Athlete Pipeline Focus.

Roots of the Crisis

The genesis of this drastic measure lies in the EFI's long-standing administrative turmoil. The FEI cited a "prolonged governance and leadership irregularity that is no longer sustainable." The EFI's elected executive committee's tenure expired in September 2023, and despite a Delhi High Court directive in February 2026 dissolving the committee and ordering fresh elections, the national federation has failed to conduct them.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had intervened by forming an ad hoc committee on March 27, 2026, to oversee the EFI and facilitate the electoral process. While the FEI acknowledged the explanation submitted by this ad hoc committee on September 27, it underscored the continued absence of a democratically elected governing body as the primary reason for the suspension.

Impact on Indian Equestrianism

Under the terms of the suspension, Indian riders, officials, trainers, and horses will be barred from competing in any international events organised by the FEI or other national federations, whether under the Indian flag or the FEI flag. Furthermore, the EFI will be prohibited from attending or being represented at any FEI meetings and will lose its right to organise international events.

This decision also has implications for Indian endurance trainers, as horses registered with other national federations but trained by individuals impacted by the EFI's suspension will require a change of trainer to remain eligible for competition from December 1, 2026. Punam Raut Retires: Star India Women Batter Announces Retirement From International Cricket.

Path Forward

Elections for the EFI executive committee are currently expected to be held by January 31, 2027. The FEI has stated that it will review the suspension only after these elections are completed and their outcome has been evaluated by the international governing body.

The ongoing administrative instability has unfortunately reached a critical point, placing the careers and aspirations of numerous Indian equestrian athletes in jeopardy until proper governance is restored within the national federation. The equestrian community now awaits a swift resolution to ensure India's return to the international stage.
