Liverpool superstars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane maintained their fast during the 2019 UEFA Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to win their sixth Champions League title at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Ramadan, the holy month for Islamic followers when they fast, started last month and ended on June 5 in most countries. Both Salah and Mane have maintained their fast and have also been praised for their exceptional performance despite abstaining from any food or drink during the daylight time. They did not break their religious obligations even for the crunch final game.

"There is no problem with the fast of my players, I respect their religion, they were always wonderful and they offered the best whether they were fasting or not,” Klopp had earlier said during a press conference before the Champions League final. “There are days when Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah came into the dressing room because they were praying,” Klopp said. “In this life, there are many things more important than football.”

Both the players were involved in scoring the first goal in the final against Tottenham Hotspur. MO Salah scored the goal from a penalty after Sadio Mane’s cross into the Spurs penalty box hit Moussa Sissoko’s arm.

Title-winning coach, Jurgen Klopp also revealed that both the players had kept their fast during the Champions League final and still put up an incredible performance.

“Salah is a Muslim. He’s doing all the things that Muslims do. Before a game, washing procedures and stuff like that. We come a minute or two minutes early in the dressing room so that he can be ready for the game. It’s him and Sadio,” said Klopp in an interview with a television channel.

Meanwhile, a debate had broken out last year after Salah decided to keep his fasts during the World Cup. Many praised him for holding on to his religious sentiments despite the gruelling football season.
