French tennis player Alize Cornet changed her top in the tennis court at the middle of the match at the US Open 2018. Little did the 28-year-old player know that she will be handed over with a code violation from the chair umpire Christian Rask. This sparked a debate on the social media and the body got trolled on social media. Netizens were quick enough to point out the sexism and slammed the US Open officials. Sexism on Court? French Player Alize Cornet Handed Violation for Changing Shirt During US Open 2018 Match
However, the officials soon revoked their decision and apologised for imposing a punishment. “All players can change their shirts when sitting in the player chair,” the USTA said in a statement. “We regret that a code violation was assessed to Ms Cornet yesterday. We have clarified the policy to ensure this will not happen moving forward. Fortunately, she has only assessed a warning with no further penalty or fine. They will not be assessed a bathroom break in this circumstance.”
The Women’s Tennis Association also said that they too did not have any rules for preventing players to change their outfit on the court. The code violation that the USTA handed to Alize Cornet during her first round match at the US Open was unfair and it was not based on a WTA rule, as the WTA has no rule against a change of attire on court,” the WTA said in a statement.
“The WTA has always been and always will be a pioneer for women and women’s sports. This code violation came under the Grand Slam rules and we are pleased to see the USTA has now changed this policy. Alize did nothing wrong,” read the statement on a concluding note.
