As Muslims across the world keep fast during the holy month of Ramzan, normal life goes on. This includes going to work, working the entire day without food or water and finally finding a quiet moment to break the fast after the sun sets. This fasting is intended to bring the faithful closer to God and to remind them of the suffering of those less fortunate. Keeping with the sentiment of this month, we hear heart-warming stories from around India and the world of good deeds and Samaritans, of those keeping the fast and those helping them keep it.

The goalkeeper of Tunisia’s national football team Mouez Hassen has contrived of a slightly underhanded way of helping his team mates break their fast as they have had to play matches while observing the fast or ‘Roza’. During recent world cup friendlies, Hassen ‘went down’ complaining of injuries which allowed his team mates to head to the sidelines to break their fast.

In their first match against Portugal, while Tunisia was 2-1 down, Hassen appeared to injure himself in the 58th minute, a move which allowed his teammates to run over to the sidelines and break their fast. After drinking some water and eating a few dates, the Tunisian team equalised six minutes later and went onto to hold Portugal’s formidable team to a 2-2 draw.

Something similar happened in Tunisia’s match with Turkey. In the 49th minute of the game, Hassen lay flat on his back while several Tunisian players ran over to the touchlines to grab some food. The score at the end of the game was again a draw with the score 2-2.

Tunisia’s form has been remarkable as they have been unbeaten during their qualifying campaign, and the team from the North African nation is making a return to the World Cup for the first time in 12 years. However, this means that the goal keeper won’t have to keep up his charade for the FIFA World Cup as the month of fasting ends with Eid-ul-Fitr on June 15.
