Thousands of users worldwide were left unable to access popular generative artificial intelligence services on Thursday after OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok suffered widespread, simultaneous technical disruptions. The outages resulted in failed prompts, high error rates, and connection timeouts across web applications and API integrations, according to a report.

Spike in Incidents Across Major Platforms

According to Downdetector data, OpenAI’s ChatGPT accounted for the vast majority of user complaints. In the United States, reports for ChatGPT surged past 35,000 at the peak of the disruption. Anthropic’s Claude recorded over 1,400 incident reports, while xAI’s Grok received more than 1,200 user complaints within the same time frame.

International user activity mirrored the U.S. trends. In India, Downdetector logged over 2,800 reports for ChatGPT, alongside hundreds of reports targeting Claude and Grok. Providers Acknowledge Issues and Deploy Fixes

Official status dashboards across all three artificial intelligence companies were updated shortly after user reports began climbing to acknowledge degraded performance.

• OpenAI: Updated its status page to indicate an active incident involving high error rates across ChatGPT features, noting that engineering teams were actively mitigating the problem.

• Anthropic: Confirmed elevated error rates across multiple Claude models. The company stated that developers had pinpointed the underlying cause and were pushing a system fix to stabilize operations.

• xAI: Observed a rapid increase in failed requests on Grok as engineers worked to resolve server-side bottlenecks.

Although concurrent outages across competing platforms often point to third-party cloud infrastructure or network routing disruptions, none of the vendors immediately confirmed a common root cause behind the shared downtime.

The simultaneous disruption highlights the operational vulnerability of modern AI infrastructure as businesses, software developers, and individual users increasingly rely on ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok for daily workflows.

System performance across the three platforms began to recover late Thursday as providers deployed patches and rerouted network traffic to clear processing backlogs.
