Elastic, the developer behind Elasticsearch and Kibana, has announced a workforce reduction of approximately 7 percent as the company pivots to integrate greater levels of artificial intelligence and automation into its core operations. CEO Ash Kulkarni confirmed the layoffs in a recent company blog post, stating that these structural changes are necessary to simplify the organisation and maintain a competitive pace of innovation.

The company noted that while customer-facing sales teams will continue to expand, other areas of the business are being streamlined as automation takes over more complex tasks. Despite the reduction, Elastic expects its overall headcount to grow throughout the current fiscal year, with ongoing recruitment planned for key strategic locations and go-to-market functions. This reorganisation follows a strong financial period, with Elastic reporting Q4 FY 2026 revenue of USD 451 million, a 16 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Elastic has undergone significant shifts in recent years, including transitions in its licensing models from Apache 2.0 to the Server Side Public License (SSPL) in 2021, and subsequently adding the AGPL v3 license in 2024 to restore its open-source status.
