Alphabet unit Google has announced a massive commitment to spend at least 13 billion EUR (15.1 billion USD) on artificial intelligence infrastructure across Finland over the next two years. Alongside this expansion, the tech major has signed its first nuclear energy purchase agreement outside the United States to power its expanding data center network.

As per a report by Reuters, the landmark arrangement includes a 22-year power purchase agreement with Finnish utility Fortum for up to 50% of the energy output from the Loviisa nuclear plant. Company executives noted that securing long-term, low-carbon electricity is crucial for supporting energy-intensive AI workloads while maintaining corporate climate commitments.┬аGoogle Layoffs: Tech Giant Has Begun Job Cuts in Taiwan, Report Says.

Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Expansion in Europe

The planned spending represents Google's largest single infrastructure investment in Europe to date. Scheduled for deployment through 2027 and 2028, the capital allocation will fund advanced data centers, local electricity grid improvements, and dedicated clean energy and battery storage initiatives.

These facilities will directly support core digital services including Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube. Finnish leadership welcomed the announcement, with Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasizing that the move validates the country's strategic advantages as a hub for sustainable digital innovation and high-tech development.

Strategic Benefits of Finland's Climate and Energy Grid

Finland has increasingly attracted major technology corporations due to its cool ambient climate, which significantly reduces the energy overhead required to cool large server arrays. Furthermore, the long-term nuclear contract provides economic certainty for the operational lifetime and upgrades of the Loviisa facility through 2050.┬аWhy Layoffs Fail As an AI Strategy and How Companies Build Resilience.

Google estimates that the construction phase will contribute approximately 3.6 billion EUR to Finland's gross domestic product, while supporting roughly 7,000 jobs annually once the new digital infrastructure becomes fully operational. Both companies also intend to explore further collaborative ventures in nuclear and renewable energy sources across the region.
