Kunal Shah, the renowned Indian entrepreneur and founder of the fintech platform CRED, has been appointed as the new global CEO of WhatsApp. The transition comes as Meta announced a USD 900 million investment in CRED, marking a significant leadership change for the world’s largest messaging platform. Shah will succeed Will Cathcart, who has led WhatsApp since 2019 and oversaw the service's expansion to over 3 billion global users.

As part of this major shift, Shah will step away from his daily operating role at the Bengaluru-based company, though he will retain his position as a shareholder. The investment round values CRED at approximately USD 4.5 billion. Meta’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, highlighted that the company sought a leader with an intuitive grasp of global product potential and the ability to navigate the complexities that artificial intelligence will introduce to communication services. Kunal Shah Steps Down as CRED CEO to Lead WhatsApp Globally at Meta, Replacing Will Cathcart; Mark Zuckerberg Shares Welcome Message.

Academic Background and Early Career

Born in Mumbai, Shah’s professional journey began far from the world of financial technology. He graduated from Wilson College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. In 2003, he enrolled in a Master of Business Administration programme at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, though he chose to leave the course before completion. Reflecting on this in past interviews, Shah noted that he found more value in learning through independent experience rather than a structured academic environment.

His entrepreneurial career gained significant momentum in August 2010 when he founded FreeCharge. The digital payments platform became a success during the early stages of India's digital payments boom and was eventually acquired by Snapdeal in 2015 for approximately USD 450 million. Following this exit, Shah served as an advisor and investor for various organisations before launching CRED in April 2018.

Strategic Vision for WhatsApp

Under Shah’s guidance, CRED grew from an initial concept into a platform boasting 17 million monthly active members. The company evolved from a credit card bill payment rewards service into a broader financial ecosystem offering lending, insurance, and wealth management services. Regarding his new role at Meta, Shah expressed that while WhatsApp has achieved significant scale, there remains a massive delta between its current state and its full potential. Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg praised Shah’s builder mentality and global perspective, which the company believes will be instrumental in guiding WhatsApp through its next phase of development. Miten Sampat, who has led strategy and finance at CRED since 2020, has been appointed as the company's interim CEO.
