Reliance Consumer Products has secured a temporary legal reprieve from the Delhi High Court, protecting its popular Campa beverage line from an immediate labelling ban by India's food safety regulator. The court ruling allows Reliance to continue marketing its products under the Campa brand as “energy drinks", halting enforcement of a contentious directive issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Background of the Regulatory Dispute

The legal challenge stems from an FSSAI order issued on June 30, which directed manufacturers of high-caffeine beverages sold as "energy drinks" to stop using the designation, reports Livemint. The regulatory push formed part of a wider compliance enforcement concerning high-caffeine products and labeling standards. Pepsi, Red Bull and Others Ordered To Remove 'Energy Drink' Labels in India by FSSAI; Here's Why.

In response, Reliance filed a petition challenging the directive, pointing out that the regulatory action had severely disrupted business operations and put large volumes of active inventory and pre-printed packaging at immediate risk.

Impact on Inventory and Market Operations

In its filings, Reliance noted that the sudden restrictions threatened extensive packaging assets, including finished inventory and pre-printed materials carrying the "Energy Drink" label. State-level enforcement actions and e-commerce removal orders had created substantial operational roadblocks for the company. With India’s energy drinks market expanding rapidly - projected by Euromonitor to grow at an annual rate of 12.6 per cent - maintaining brand labeling continuity remains critical for major players competing in the segment. Red Bull, Sting, Campa Among 6 Beverage Brands Issued FSSAI Notices Over 'Energy Drink' Claims.

Wider Industry Implications

Alongside Reliance, the Delhi High Court also put on hold the regulator's order against other major beverage manufacturers, including PepsiCo and Monster Beverage, which faced similar compliance pressure. Austria's Red Bull had separately secured a similar court reprieve. The interim relief eases immediate operational pressure on beverage manufacturers as legal proceedings and regulatory discussions move forward.
